A Chef's Secret

Found these written on the mirror of Mariners' Corner Steakhouse.

~ Chef's Secret ~
  1. If you doubt the freshness of a fish, place it in cold water. If it floats it has been caught recently.
  2. To prevent celery from turning brown, soak it in lemon juice and H2O before refrigerating.
  3. Lettuce should always be torn, never cut or the edges will turn brown faster.

I'm not sure how true it is coz I didn't do the cooking at home. :P

Mariners' Corner Restaurant & Steak House

I am back to school again!
Now I'm attending a course in Singapore Poly and today is my 2nd lesson of the two and the half month course.

After class, I went 'makaning' with Alan, only the two of us (leaving the children at home, hahaha). When Trishh saw the pictures I've taken, she yelled unfair............
She said she only had chicken rice at home!

Well, we went to Mariners' Corner Restaurant & Steak House.

Mariners' Corner has been around since 1984 and it reminded me of 'The Ship Restaurant' at Shaw Centre........

..........the old feeling of yesteryears.

Both Alan and I ordered Ribeye set lunch that comes with soup of the day, buffet salad, dessert and tea or coffee. I also ordered the Escargot (my fav) to share.

The Escargot Gastrome

My medium rare Ribeye steak served in a hot plate....... .

Mango pudding for dessert and a cup of tea for me.

A simple meal that leaves you completely satisfied.

Will bring the children along next time as promised.

Mama 96th Bday!

Wow, it's mama's (Sean & Trishh's great grandmother)
96th birthday......

She's approaching a century!

As usual (for the past 5 years), we celebrated her birthday at Copthorne King's Hotel.

Mama has invited at least 50 guests and relatives for her birthday celebration. We also had the honour of the Bishop from St Andrew's Cathedral Church to give her his blessing.

Mama has a total of 18 brothers and sisters. But 9 siblings went missing during the war and up till today only 2 younger brothers and 3 sisters are still around (all in their late 80s). Mama is number 9th in the family and the oldest now. She is a Peranakan and has been living in Katong almost all her life. She lost her husband during the war, has 3 children and remarried a doctor (passsed away in the 80s)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The King's Hotel serves authentic and hearty Penang cuisine like:
- Char Kway Teow
- Penang Laksa
- Prawn Mee Soup
- Popiah
- Pig’s Stomach Soup
- Braised Pork with Yam
- Curry King Prawn
- Inchee Kabin
- Fish Curry
- Braised Pork Knuckle with Soya Sauce
- Desserts like Nonya Kueh, Chendol, Homemade Soya Bean Curd, etc.
Not very impressed with the buffet spread as well as the taste of the food.
Darien's Bday
After Mama's birthday lunch, we went to Darien's birthday celebration.
Today he's 13 years old!
We had a family gathering and lots of food, food, food again!
My sis's mother-in-law can really cook...... I'm so engrossed with eating that I've forgotten to take any pics.....hahaha!
After dinner, we chatted with the children the funny and naughty things that had happened in school.
It seems like only yesterday.....
See how quickily times flies and how quickily the children have grown up!
Mid Autumn Festival 中秋节
On the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, the moon is at the fullest. The round shape to a Chinese means family reunion. Therefore the Mid Autumn Festival or Moon Cake Festival is a day for members of a family to get together wherever it is possible.
Mid-Autumn Festival is also known as “Harvest Festival”.
This festival signals that the year's hard work in the fields will soon come to an end, with only the harvest left to attend to. People use this opportunity to express their gratitude to heaven (represented by the moon) and earth (symbolized by the earth god) for the blessings they have enjoyed over the past year.
The round "moon cakes" eaten on this festival are symbolic of family unity & closeness and also reflects people's pursuit of a round and perfect life.
Watching the moon, while eating these cakes is a custom, which is meant to encourage people to seek the brightness of the moon in their journey through life.
“水调歌头 Shui diao ge tou” is the most popular poem about the moon and the moon festival. (now in pop music too :)
水调歌头 The Moon Festival (苏轼 Su shi)
明月几时有, 把酒问青天。
不知天上宫阙, 今夕是何年?
我欲乘风归去, 又恐琼楼玉宇,
高处不胜寒, 起舞弄清影,
何似在人间!
转朱阁,低绮户,照无眠。
不应有恨, 何事长向别时圆?
人有悲欢离合, 月有阴晴圆缺,
此事古难全。
但愿人长久,千里共婵娟。
(English Translation)
Bright moon, when was your birth?
Winecup in hand, I ask the deep blue sky.
Not knowing what year it is tonight
In those celestial palaces on high.
I long to fly back one the wind,
Yet dread those crystal towers, those courts of jade,
Freezing to death among those icy heights!
Instead I rise to dance with my pale shadow;
Better off, after all, in the world of men.
Rounding the red pavilion,
Stooping to look through gauze windows,
She shines on the sleepless.
The moon should know no sadness;
Why then, is she always full when dear ones are parted?
For men the grief of parting, joy of reunion,
Just as the moon wanes and waxes, is bright or dim:
Always some flaw-and so it has been since of old.
My one wish for you, is long life
And a share in this loveliness far, far away!
Food Again! ~~~ @ Botak Jones, Bedok
As you can see, I'm indulging myself with food these days and all the diet plans have gone into the drain...... I'm growing sideways :o
We went to Botak Jones @ Bedok and
ordered their all time fav, Fish & Chips
Baked Garlic Salmon. I especially love the chilli fries..... Mmmmm!
Posing for the camera, the satisfied customer :D
While waiting for our food to be served, I spotted some interesting articles..... Like this little facts on the table
and this..... "Words Women Say" in the menu.
*Fine*
This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.
*Five Minutes*
If she is getting dressed, this is half an hour.
Five minutes is only five minutes if you have been 5 more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.
*Nothing*
This is the calm before the storm. This means “something’, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with “Nothing” usually end in “Fine”.
*Go ahead*
This is a dare, not permission. Don’t do it.
*Loud Sigh*
This is not actually a word, but a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A “loud sigh” means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over “Nothing”.
*That’s Okay*
This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a man. “That’s Okay” means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.
*Thanks*
A woman is thanking you. Do not question it or faint.
Just say, “You’re Welcome”.
Beppu Menkan Japanese Noodle Restaurant
My collegaues and I were looking for a place where we could sit down for a long chat while dinning. Finally we decided on Beppu Menkan Japanese Noodle Restaurant at Suntec.
The restuarant noodle menu is inspired by one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, Beppu hot springs (jigoku), are called “hell noodles”; as jigoku literally translated means hell. http://www.insidejapantours.com/beppu.html
They served the noodle ranged from non-spicy to piping hot spicy, 1 chilli which is mild, 2 chillies which is moderate, 4 chillies for the those who love it more spicy and 6 to 8 chillies are for those who are the chilli kings or queens.
I've decided upon the Beef Ramen with spice level equivalent to 4 chillies. It does not look all that spicy but it's super duper hot lor & I like it! >.<
my friends ordered the Oniyama Jigoku, 1 & 2 chilli spice
(Fried Chicken Ramen)
and the Seafood Paper Pot.
Besides their famed spicy ramen specialty, Beppu Restaurant also serves other Japanese cuisine like Shabu Shabu, Sukiyaki, etc etc etc.
After dinner, we went to NYDC for our desserts. I took the "Priscilla's Fav" which is cheese cake with chunky chocolate chips ice-cream, yum yum....
I didn't take any pictures cause I'm too busy indulging myself.
However, after dining at this outlet, I smell of cooked food.....
Happy Teachers' Day
Yeah, it's Teacher's Day today.... School Holiday too!
We had our Teachers' Day dinner at Jack's Place on Friday.
I have not been to Jack's Place for a long time. Going back to Jack's Place gives me a sense of familiarity. This place brings back memories and it reminded me of the good old days. The ambience of the restaurant is still very much the same as before with the retro green tablecloth except that the prices have all gone up!
I've been indulging myself lately.
The food I've ordered............ Lobster Bisque
seafood salad.........
the baked escargots with garlics......
(pic was taken only after I've almost eaten all..... hihi)
baked mushroom with something, can't remember what it is.
Anyway, all these were shared among 5 colleagues except my main course,
the all time fav, Steak on hot plate........
I love the baked potato with lots of toppings. Delizioso!
My dessert.... peaches with ice-cream.
Some of my colleagues!
